Common Causes of Highway Crashes

Posted in Car Accidents, Personal Injury on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020

Accidents on our highways are as common as they are dangerous. The impact of two vehicles crashing into one another at highway speeds can lead to life-threatening injuries and extensive financial, physical, and emotional damages. If another motorist leaves you injured in a highway crash, seek the professional legal counsel of an experienced Joliet personal injury attorney today.

Driver Negligence

The truth is that traffic accidents on our highway are often caused by driver negligence. When we take to the road in our vehicles, we take on an enormous responsibility, and motorists who shirk this responsibility make dangerous highway crashes that much more likely. Driver negligence can take many forms, and each of them is exceedingly dangerous, including:

  • Excessive Speed – Speed plays a pivotal role in far too many deadly traffic accidents. Motorists who don’t abide by the speed limit put us all in greater danger. In fact, the National Safety Council (NSC) shares that speed was implicated in more than one-quarter of all deadly traffic accidents in 2018, which amounts to 8,447 deadly crashes. This translates to a speed-related death rate of 25 people per day in the United States.
  • Aggression – Aggressive drivers tend to throw caution to the wind and engage in whatever dangerous driving practice suits their mood in the moment. Such practices can include darting in and out of traffic, passing on the left (or even on the shoulder), failing to yield the right of way, cutting off other motorists, tailgating, gesturing and/or screaming at other drivers obscenely, speeding dangerously (immense speed is the hallmark of aggressive driving), and much more. Aggressive drivers are easy to recognize on the road and should always be avoided.
  • Impairment – Although the dangers associated with driving while under the influence of alcohol are widely known, some drivers refuse to give up this widely condemned practice. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shares that 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2018 involved at least one impaired motorist, which means that an alcohol-related traffic fatality happened every 50 minutes.
  • Distraction – Drivers who allow their attention to veer away from their primary task of driving safely make deadly traffic accidents more likely. While distraction can come in many different forms, interacting with one’s smartphone takes pride of place as the most dangerous – and increasingly common – distraction.
  • Exhaustion – Drowsy drivers’ response times are very similar to impaired drivers’ response times, which means that drowsy drivers are exceedingly dangerous drivers. Some motorists who wouldn’t dream of getting behind the wheel drunk think nothing of driving drowsy, and our highways are less safe as a result.
